Painter David Boyd, Jr. traveled to Florida's Forgotten Coast earlier this month for the QuickDraw event held during the Great American Paint Out. The Great American Paint Out is one of the east coast's premier plein air, or open air, painting events. The full ten-day Paint Out is an invitation-only event and only the top painters in the country make the short list; however, they host a one-day QuickDraw competition that is open to all artists who enjoy painting in plein air. For 2 years, Boyd has been going down for the QuickDraw in hopes of securing a future invitation to the full event.
In a QuickDraw competition artists check in, have canvases stamped, find a spot and subject to paint, and wait for the timed event to begin. Artists have 2 hours to complete the piece and then frame and display the piece for judging. This year, the QuickDraw was held at St. Joseph State Park near Cape San Blas, FL. To every painter's dismay, torrential rain began at the same time the QuickDraw started. While most painters elected to paint under a nearby pavilion, Boyd chose to head out into the open rain to paint. Despite having forgotten his raincoat, Boyd grabbed a trash bag to use as a raincoat and headed to the beach. In the end, Boyd was awarded as the "Best Emerging Artist" for his painting entitled "Calm" at the QuickDraw event.
This is the second national honor the local painter has received in the last year. Boyd received the "Honorable Mention" award for his piece, "Three Wise Men and a Caddy", at the American Impressionist Society's National Exhibition in Indianapolis last fall.
